Low temperatures are expected to impact 108 municipalities in Guatemala during the first weekend of December, according to a forecast from the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH). In response, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) is monitoring these areas for potential effects on agriculture.

An agrometeorological analysis by MAGA, based on INSIVUMEH's forecast, identified vulnerable regions where ongoing surveillance will focus on preventing damage to crops. The ministry highlighted that vegetables, coffee, and pasturelands are particularly susceptible to cold conditions. Municipalities in Huehuetenango, Quiché, San Marcos, Quetzaltenango and Chimaltenango are especially at risk due to historically significant temperature drops.

Moisture from both coasts is expected to bring cloud cover and possible drizzle to the Northern Transversal Strip, the Caribbean region and Bocacosta. Heavy clouds are likely in northern regions while other parts of the country may see clearer skies. Nighttime and early morning temperatures will remain low with colder conditions anticipated in western areas and high elevations of the Central Highlands.

Given these weather conditions, MAGA issued recommendations for producers: "The appropriate action is to shred crop residue rather than burn it and incorporate it into the soil to improve moisture retention and increase organic matter." For areas prone to frost at higher altitudes they advise: "Apply irrigation at the end of the afternoon to reduce frost formation on crops."

For livestock activities MAGA recommends ensuring warm water access for poultry so their consumption does not decrease. For fish and crustacean tanks they advise maintaining water temperature control and adequate oxygen levels as a preventive measure against disease outbreaks.

"The MAGA reaffirms its commitment to inform and support producers when weather conditions could affect national production," stated officials from the ministry.
