The "Agricultura Amigable al Ambiente" project, developed by the Escuela de Formación Agrícola (EFA) in Cobán, Alta Verapaz and overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA), has been awarded first place in the Environmental Education category at the GEMAS Guatemala 2025 Environmental and Cultural Awards.
The project was led by Professor César Guiller Fetzer Paz. It was recognized for its contributions to environmental education through initiatives such as virtual reality spaces, meteorological stations, agroforestry systems, and practices that connect scientific learning with nature.
This initiative emphasizes sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural practices. It incorporates innovative technologies and provides training to students on producing healthy foods that respect natural surroundings.
After receiving the award, Fetzer stated: “Children and adolescents are the beacon of development for our country. Environmental education is one of the great emblems of EFA Cobán, Alta Verapaz.” He also highlighted that this achievement is a collaborative effort involving teachers, students, faculty members, and authorities at EFA.
MAGA congratulated EFA Alta Verapaz and its team for this accomplishment. The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to promoting environmental education and sustainable development among rural communities and young people.
The Directorate of Regional Coordination and Rural Extension (DICORER) within MAGA oversees all four EFAs in Guatemala. DICORER works to ensure quality education for young people through various actions and efforts across these institutions.
The GEMAS Guatemala award is a private sector initiative recognizing successful projects, research efforts, and experiences led by educators, students, researchers, universities, and research centers focused on environmental topics in different areas.
