The Hospital de Gineco Obstetricia, part of the Instituto Guatemalteco de Seguridad Social (IGSS), held a commemorative event for World Prematurity Day to highlight the importance of specialized care and continuous support for newborns who require immediate medical attention.
Dr. Víctor Calderón, head of the Neonatology Department, opened the event by emphasizing the multidisciplinary work performed daily in the unit, where premature infants receive intensive care and constant monitoring. According to hospital data, there were 9,284 births in the first ten months of this year, with 1,561 being premature. The hospital also provided care to over 121,000 pregnant women and attended more than 30,000 emergencies during that period.
One significant moment featured Susana Godínez, mother of a premature baby who was hospitalized for nearly 100 days. She shared her story and gratitude: "I thank the staff at Hospital de Gineco Obstetricia IGSS for the care given to my baby." Her experience illustrates some common challenges faced by premature infants such as bacterial sepsis, infectious and parasitic diseases, low birth weight, and congenital pneumonia.
The event included an explanation about “Pulpos de Lana,” knitted octopus toys used to comfort premature babies and provide them with a sense of security. The implementation of the Kangaroo Care Plan was also highlighted; this method involves skin-to-skin contact and encourages parents’ active participation in their newborn’s care. It is designed to support both physical and emotional development while strengthening family bonds.
Cultural activities were part of the day’s program as well, including a performance by saxophonist Elder Tubín. The hospital recognized its maternity and neonatology staff for their dedication to caring for newborns. "It is important to accompany families with sensitivity, guidance, and empathy during hospitalization," said hospital authorities. They emphasized that each step taken supports recovery for premature babies.
The ceremony concluded with symbolic recognition awarded to maternity and neonatology staff members who play an essential role in supporting both infants and their families throughout hospitalization.
