The Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) has conducted a training session aimed at workplace health promoters to strengthen HIV prevention efforts in the country. The event brought together representatives from more than 28 companies, focusing on occupational health and safety as well as strategies for preventing HIV transmission.
During the session, Glendy Barrondo, an inspector of Safety and Hygiene at IGSS, presented statistics highlighting the scope of HIV in Guatemala. She noted that there are over 41,000 cumulative cases and about 2,000 new infections each year, with adolescents, young people, and children being most affected. Barrondo stated that these figures "reinforce the need to strengthen education, prevention and timely diagnosis."
Speakers at the event emphasized the important role played by IGSS and company health promoters in both HIV prevention and overall workplace wellbeing. Mynor Mejía, head of the Safety and Hygiene Section at IGSS, commented on the significance of training for these promoters: “Having sensitized and trained personnel allows us to identify risk factors, provide timely guidance and promote use of IGSS medical services, including those offered by the Disability, Old Age and Survivors Program (IVS).”
IGSS authorities reiterated their commitment to ongoing campaigns raising awareness about sexually transmitted diseases. They also highlighted that collaboration with employers is essential for creating respectful and inclusive workplaces free from discrimination. This partnership supports comprehensive care for people living with HIV while promoting health within work environments.
