The Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) held the eighth "Residentes 360" Congress, an academic event aimed at advancing the professional development of medical residents and encouraging a comprehensive approach to healthcare in Guatemala.
Approximately 350 resident doctors from various specialties participated in the congress. During the event, José Adolfo Flamenco Jau, President of the IGSS Board of Directors, addressed attendees and stated, "You are agents of change who will transform your colleagues through example."
The academic program covered key topics relevant to modern medical practice. Sessions included discussions on comprehensive patient care, scientific writing, artificial intelligence in medicine, legal frameworks for residency programs, as well as professional wellbeing and mental health. These were led by both national experts and invited guests.
Flamenco Jau highlighted the work of resident doctors at IGSS and noted that "Residentes 360" promotes learning, innovation, and ongoing education as central components of medical practice. The congress also recognized the need to support not only clinical knowledge but also the emotional and professional wellbeing of medical personnel—factors that directly affect patient care across Guatemala.
Dr. Yuri Mazariegos, a pediatric infectious disease resident at Hospital General de Enfermedades, described the congress as a dynamic and enriching experience. He said that its topics provide practical tools for daily work and foster continuous learning among resident physicians.
Awards were presented to doctors recognized for their contributions in research and innovation. Organizers emphasized that addressing medicine from a broad and human perspective is essential—considering both physician and patient care as fundamental elements of the healthcare system. IGSS states that such initiatives support high-quality medical attention and strengthen institutional commitment to affiliates and beneficiaries.
