A three-day training session on animal welfare was held in San Juan Sacatepéquez, Guatemala, aimed at strengthening the knowledge of local institutions and community leaders. The event was organized through collaboration between the Municipal Environmental Management Directorate (DIGAM) and the Animal Welfare Unit (UBA) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA).
Representatives from various organizations attended, including the Municipal Council, Ministry of Health, First and Second Municipal Courts, Culture and Sports Department, Social Communication office, San Francisco del Bosque Municipal Agency, members of several COCODES (Community Development Councils), and other key municipal actors.
The training took place from Tuesday, November 11 to Thursday, November 13, 2025. Topics covered included the Animal Protection and Welfare Law (Decree 5-2017), background on animal welfare, responsible pet ownership, the link between animal abuse and social violence, as well as population control for companion animals.
Each subject was addressed with the aim of building capacity and encouraging responsible actions to benefit both animal welfare and the community.
"The UBA continues reaffirming its commitment to promoting inter-institutional efforts that contribute to strengthening animal welfare and building safer and more responsible environments for all," stated representatives from UBA.
