The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA), through the Vice Ministry of Food and Nutritional Security (VISAN), has started distributing food rations to 16,143 families in four departments of Guatemala. The initiative targets municipalities experiencing food insecurity.

According to MAGA, this effort is part of a government strategy aimed at ensuring the human right to food, with a focus on vulnerable populations and strengthening institutional response in rural areas facing higher vulnerability.

Food distribution is being carried out free of charge and simultaneously in several locations: 7,550 families in San Andrés Sajcabajá, Quiché; 2,876 families in San Bartolomé Jocotenango, Sacatepéquez; 2,529 families in Colotenango and 2,885 families in La Democracia, both in Huehuetenango; and 303 families in Esquipulas, Chiquimula.

Each ration contains rice, beans, vegetable oil, nixtamalized corn flour, oat flakes, sugar and fortified corn-soy flour. The goal is to improve family diets and reduce the effects of food insecurity.

“With these actions, MAGA reaffirms its commitment to continue working for the most vulnerable families in the country,” stated the ministry.
