On November 5, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) conducted an epidemiological surveillance and prophylactic care campaign in the municipalities of Oratorio and Chiquimulilla, located in Santa Rosa. The activity was carried out through the National Swine Health Program (PRONASPORC) with the aim of improving animal health and preventing pig diseases.
More than 30 backyard pig producers from the villages of La Canoa, La Ceiba, and Los Cerritos were visited. During these visits, technicians inspected animals for signs of Classical Swine Fever, red diseases in pigs, and Screwworm presence. Over 100 pigs received vitamins and deworming treatments. Technical assistance on management, nutrition, and animal health was also provided to producers.
Educational talks were given about Screwworms, including their symptoms, treatment options, and preventive measures. Emphasis was placed on reporting cases to relevant authorities.
The results indicated no high-risk animal diseases were detected during this round of surveillance; however, one case of Screwworm infestation was addressed. MAGA stated that these actions demonstrate its commitment to maintaining national herd health and ensuring food security for Guatemalan families who consume pork.
MAGA said these activities are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen agricultural health across the country while supporting small rural producers.
