Guatemala and Costa Rica have taken steps to enhance their cooperation on sanitary measures in the fisheries sector. As part of ongoing agreements between the two countries, officials conducted an origin inspection at Guatemalan facilities interested in exporting fishery products to Costa Rica.

The inspection took place from January 10 to 14 and involved authorities from both nations. Guatemala was represented by staff from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA), including the Vice Ministry of Agricultural Health and Regulations (VISAR), the Directorate of Food Safety, and the Department of Animal and Hydrobiological Products.

Key areas reviewed during the process included infrastructure conditions, hygiene procedures, food safety controls, and product traceability.

According to MAGA, "The main objective of the inspection was to evaluate that the establishments visited comply with the measures and requirements established by the Costa Rican health authority. This is part of the process for recognition and maintenance of necessary authorization to export fishery products to that country."

MAGA added: "With these actions, MAGA reaffirms its commitment to strengthening food safety and opening international markets, promoting safe trade and compliance with regional sanitary standards."
