The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA), in partnership with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), is advancing the RELIVE program in Purulhá, Baja Verapaz. The initiative aims to strengthen the livelihoods of vulnerable small farmers.

As part of the program, geomembranes were installed and training sessions on drip irrigation systems were provided to promoters from eight Rural Development Learning Centers (CADER). The main focus is on promoting family gardens and supplying materials for building eight reservoirs in Purulhá. These gardens help diversify diets by providing fresh and nutritious food, while surplus produce can be sold to generate income.

Reservoirs play a key role by storing rainwater or runoff to ensure a steady supply of water for the gardens during dry periods. Each reservoir supports between five and fifteen gardens, also contributing to local water recharge.

In addition to infrastructure improvements, the program includes donations of seeds, seedlings, and organic fertilizer for each garden. The RELIVE initiative is being implemented in various locations across the country, including Purulhá in Baja Verapaz.
