The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) has completed the national participatory diagnostic phase for the National Fire Policy (PNF). This policy is expected to influence food security, rural productivity, and climate resilience in Guatemala.

MAGA organized nine regional consultation workshops that covered all 22 departments of the country. Over 400 specialists and experts took part, representing state institutions, municipalities, the private sector, academia, and community leaders. The final workshop for the Metropolitan region marked the end of this phase on November 28, 2025.

"Today we close this cycle with a consolidated national vision that will allow us to move towards a National Fire Policy built from the territory with a technical and participatory approach," said Minister of Agriculture María Fernanda Rivera Dávila at the concluding session.

The PNF aims to serve as a binding state instrument regulating fire use in agriculture, livestock, fishing, and rural landscapes. "Fire management has a direct impact on food security, productivity, biosecurity and rural well-being," Rivera Dávila added.

The construction process for the policy has involved extensive consultations intended to promote responsible fire use practices to improve productivity while protecting the environment. With this consultation phase finished, MAGA will proceed to develop a national problem tree analysis and solution matrix before drafting a preliminary document. This draft will be reviewed by SEGEPLAN (the Secretariat of Planning and Programming of the Presidency) ahead of potential official approval.
