Five hundred women in Escuintla have received seedlings of culturally relevant and nutritious crops, including chipilín, jalapeño pepper, Swiss chard, parsley, cilantro, celery, and onion. The initiative is part of the “Hogares Saludables” municipal program and aims to support the production of healthy food for Guatemalan households.

The distribution is one of several actions by the Ministerio de Agricultura, Ganadería y Alimentación (MAGA) focused on strengthening family farming. The ministry seeks to encourage more families to grow their own food, diversify home gardens, and improve food security.

According to MAGA, "These deliveries are part of the actions of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA), which are aimed at strengthening family agriculture by promoting that more families produce their own food, diversify their gardens and improve their food security."

The beneficiaries will use these vegetable seedlings in family gardens. This is expected to increase access to fresh foods, support household economies, and reinforce traditional agricultural practices within the community.

The event was coordinated by staff from the Dirección de Apoyo a la Producción Comunitaria de Alimentos (DAPCA), under the Viceministerio de Seguridad Alimentaria y Nutricional (VISAN) at MAGA. The Municipal Office for Food Security and Nutrition (OMSAN) in Escuintla also participated in organizing the activity.
