The Francisco Marroquín University (UFM) Host Club held its traditional "alma" ceremony on November 3, 2025, at the Rose Friedman terrace. The event honored graduating members Wendy Borrayo, Henry Ochoa, and Carlos Umul, who received their "almas," a symbolic gesture marking their years of service in the club.
Cristina Hernández, coordinator of the Host Club, addressed the attendees: "The UFM Host Club is more than a team; it is a family of friends whom we care for deeply." She continued, "We thank you for all your efforts because each one of you is the living representation of UFM's values. Thank you for your dedication, your hours, your service, your affection and, as you always know, this is your home."
Wendy Borrayo reflected on her time with the club: "I have always loved this environment full of friendship and family. They asked me how long I have been in the club and officially this year marks 14 years on the team. Four of them were in coordination. I have met each one who has passed through the club and genuinely each one touched my heart; each left a mark on my life. I love knowing that I have friends like you—so helpful, loyal and... so wonderful."
Henry Ochoa also shared his thoughts: "Thank you very much to everyone. Hosts are one of the most special parts of my university life. I really miss coming to first Tuesdays and running into that group of happy friends—so willing and helpful. I think that's what I like most about the group. I love you all very much."
Carlos Umul described his experience: "The UFM Host Club is one of the best at Marroquín. Every time it was my turn to be a host it was something very special because you feel very comfortable with people; you can express yourself and connect. Belonging to the host group makes it easier to meet people that if not for this club you would not have met: experts in different fields. I think it's a wonderful club and hope it continues to exist."
During the ceremony, badges were awarded to several members recognizing their specialties within the club.
The tradition known as returning “almas” involves graduating members receiving their identification badges used during events as keepsakes along with distinctions based on their participation.
Members of UFM’s Host Club come from all academic units and include both students and graduates across various years. Their role includes representing UFM at public and private events while helping guests feel welcome at what is known as Casa de la Libertad.
Host Club members have contributed to activities such as meetings of the Mont Pelerin Society, MIT Global Startup Workshop 2015, entrepreneur forums, International Map Collectors’ Society symposiums, graduation ceremonies, College Freedom Forums, The Antigua Forum, visits by notable figures including Nobel laureate Vernon L. Smith, Association of Private Economic Education meetings among others.
Each returned “alma” represents a strong bond with UFM’s mission—to teach and promote ethical principles supporting a free society.
According to university representatives, hosts embody Francisco Marroquín University’s values through enthusiasm, friendship and service spirit.
