The Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) has announced the implementation of a contingency plan aimed at prevention in three main areas, seeking to ensure that members and the general population can safely participate in Día de Todos los Santos traditions and the long weekend.
Dr. Mynor Mejía, head of the Safety and Hygiene and Accident Prevention Section, outlined that road safety is the first area of focus. "We know that many people travel or visit cemeteries in other departments, so we call for caution when driving," said Dr. Mejía.
IGSS is urging people to enjoy Día de Todos los Santos festivities responsibly by prioritizing accident prevention in crowded places. The institute recommends checking vehicles before departure, avoiding overloading cars, respecting traffic signs, and not consuming alcohol while driving. Motorcyclists are advised to wear helmets and reflective vests and avoid using mobile phones while on the road.
For those planning trips, Dr. Mejía suggests planning routes ahead of time, inspecting brakes, lights, oil, and tires, and ensuring drivers are well-rested before setting out. Homeowners are encouraged to secure their houses by locking doors and windows and turning off gas valves when leaving home as well as notifying a trusted neighbor or relative.
Authorities from IGSS recommend reviewing vehicles, obeying traffic laws, and refraining from alcohol consumption to prevent accidents during the holiday break.
The second focus addresses gatherings and family activities such as cemetery visits or attending traditional giant kite festivals in western Guatemala. Dr. Mejía emphasized supervising children closely, maintaining proper hydration and nutrition for them, and ensuring older adults do not miss medications or meal times.
He also highlighted food safety regarding typical seasonal dishes like fiambre and traditional sweets to avoid cases of food poisoning.
The third preventive area concerns water safety for bathers. During the holiday period, IGSS's Rescue Corps will provide support at 14 Pacific beaches as well as two lakes and recreational centers throughout Guatemala. Recommendations include avoiding swimming under the influence of alcohol, using sunscreen, respecting designated swimming times, and following lifeguards’ instructions.
"The Social Security Institute stands ready during these dates to address any emergency and ensure the safety of Guatemalans," Dr. Mejía stated. He concluded by encouraging everyone to celebrate with caution, solidarity, and responsibility.
