This week, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) is distributing 14,810 food rations to rural families who have participated in community development projects. The initiative is part of the Alimentos por Acciones (APA) program.
The food deliveries are taking place simultaneously across several municipalities and departments. According to MAGA, this effort recognizes communities for their actions aimed at improving local conditions and strengthening food security. Oversight from personnel of the Comptroller General’s Office ensures transparency during the distribution process.
The breakdown of recipients by location includes: 3,437 families in Purulhá, Baja Verapaz; 193 in Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, Escuintla; 489 in San Pedro Nécta, 574 in Concepción Huista, and 406 in Petatán—all in Huehuetenango; 185 in Pueblo Nuevo, 367 in Santo Tomás La Unión, and 262 in Santo Domingo Suchitepéquez—Suchitepéquez; 903 families in Cuilapa, Santa Rosa; 810 in Amatitlán, Guatemala; 2,115 in Santa Lucía La Reforma, Totonicapán; and finally, Zacapa saw distributions to 1,048 families in Cabañas, 2,194 in Río Hondo and 1,827 families in San Diego.
Each ration contains rice, nixtamalized flour, black beans, vegetable oil, iodized salt, oat flakes, sugar and a fortified blend of corn and soy flour. This combination is intended to provide adequate nutrition for each family group.
Communities earned these rations through various projects such as establishing family and community gardens; producing and planting trees for agroforestry systems; building chicken coops; cleaning water sources; adding value to harvested products through artisanal processes carried out by women or fertilizer producers.
