The Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) and the Pan American Social Marketing Organization (PASMO) have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen HIV care and prevention efforts in Guatemala. The agreement was formalized on November 5 by Dr. Francisco Javier Gódinez Jerez, Deputy Manager of Health Benefits at IGSS, and Orida Susana Lungo Gálvez de López, president and legal representative of PASMO.

The partnership aims to provide technical assistance and specialized support to IGSS in order to improve the quality of services for members, beneficiaries, and pensioners living with HIV. It also seeks to expand education initiatives, early detection programs, and adherence to treatment while ensuring that services are delivered with warmth, quality, and without stigma or discrimination.

During the signing ceremony, Dr. Francisco Gódinez stated: “This alliance strengthens the institutional response to HIV by incorporating good practices in care and prevention that directly benefit our members and beneficiaries.” Orida Lungo added: “PASMO reiterates its commitment to work in coordination with IGSS to ensure comprehensive and humanized services focused on people’s health and well-being.”

Under the agreement, PASMO will provide technical assistance, training sessions, and monitoring tools designed to enhance institutional strategies. IGSS will be responsible for coordinating, evaluating, and supervising activities across its medical units, including infectious disease clinics and institutional blood banks.

The agreement is set for five years with the possibility of extension upon mutual consent. Both organizations reaffirmed their commitment to public health as well as strengthening programs for prevention, detection, and comprehensive care related to HIV in Guatemala.
