A monitoring operation focused on shrimp trawl fishing was carried out in Itztapa and Puerto San José, Escuintla. The activity aimed to support fisheries inspectors in the evaluation and sustainable management of marine resources.
During the operation, data was collected on sizes, species, and catch volumes. This information is considered essential for assessing fisheries and implementing responsible management measures along Guatemala’s southern coast.
Inspectors also examined the vessel “José Luis” before its departure to ensure compliance with fishing regulations. Particular attention was given to the proper use of Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs), which are required as part of ongoing efforts to promote sustainable fishing practices.
Additional biological data were gathered from landings at Rancho El Calamar in Iztapa, Escuintla. These efforts are intended to strengthen monitoring and evaluation of fishery resources in the area.
According to officials, “These actions form part of the technical work carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA), through the Vice Ministry of Agricultural Health and Regulations (VISAR) and the Directorate for Fisheries and Aquaculture Regulation (DIPESCA), fulfilling its commitment to conservation and sustainable use of fishery resources in the country.”
