The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) in Guatemala has launched a pilot plan to promote tilapia farming as a way to improve nutrition and food security in rural communities. The initiative aims to increase both the production and consumption of tilapia, which is considered an accessible source of high-quality animal protein.
The project is led by the Vice Ministry of Food and Nutritional Security (VISAN). It focuses on supporting families who have limited access to animal protein, especially children and mothers in vulnerable situations. Sandra Recinos, coordinator of the Nutrition component at VISAN, stated: “Tilapia contains high-quality animal protein that helps strengthen health and prevent malnutrition.”
According to MAGA, tilapia offers several nutritional benefits. It is rich in quality proteins essential for growth and tissue repair, low in fat and calories, provides B vitamins that support the nervous system and metabolism, contains minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium important for bones and muscles, and is easy to prepare for people of all ages.
Nutritionists working with the Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture component are participating in this project across Chiquimula, Santa Rosa, and Alta Verapaz departments. They will promote tilapia consumption through community talks, demonstrations, and educational activities.
MAGA states that this initiative demonstrates its commitment to food security by promoting productive alternatives that improve family diets while also supporting local economies.
