A biological monitoring of lobsters was conducted in the Barrio El Rastro area of Puerto Barrios, Izabal. The initiative aimed to gather scientific data on this commercially important species and support sustainable fisheries management in the Caribbean region of Guatemala.

Technical staff from the Directorate for Fisheries and Aquaculture Regulation (DIPESCA) carried out the monitoring. The process involved collecting information on size, weight, sex, and location of capture for each specimen.

“These actions are part of the efforts that the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA), through the Vice Ministry of Agricultural Health and Regulations (VISAR) and DIPESCA, is promoting to strengthen responsible fisheries management and ensure the conservation of marine species,” according to officials.

The collected data will be used to inform decisions about fishing practices in the region.
