On November 4, biological monitoring took place in the municipalities of San Andrés and Sayaxché, Petén. The aim was to gather biological information on fish species that are commercially important.
During the monitoring activities along the shores of Lake Petén Itzá, data was collected on weight, size, sex, and capture location. Local fishermen from San Andrés assisted in these efforts.
According to officials, these activities help strengthen the fisheries database and guide strategies for sustainable management of aquatic resources. Staff from the Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture Regulation (DIPESCA), part of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA), conducted the work.
In Sayaxché, similar data collection took place for species caught in the La Pasión River. Information on size, weight, and sex was recorded for population analysis and assessment of commercially important species.
“These actions are part of the technical work carried out by MAGA, through the Vice Ministry of Agricultural Health and Regulations (VISAR) and DIPESCA, to promote conservation and responsible use of fishery resources in the country,” stated ministry representatives.
The monitoring is intended to support both conservation efforts and responsible resource use at a national level.
