A total of 120 piglets were distributed to small-scale women farmers in Petén by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) as part of a program aimed at boosting livestock productivity and improving the genetic quality of local pig herds.

The distribution took place between January and October this year, reaching 171 community groups across several municipalities including Flores, San José, San Benito, San Andrés, La Libertad, San Francisco, Santa Ana, Dolores, San Luis, Sayaxché, Melchor de Mencos, Poptún, Las Cruces and El Chal.

The piglets came from the Eco-Productive Center El Remate in Flores. This center focuses on strengthening production and enhancing pig genetics in the region.

Staff from the Livestock Department of the Directorate for Agricultural Development (DAGRO), under the Vice Ministry for Petén Affairs (VIPETÉN), coordinated the deliveries.

According to MAGA, "This initiative allows for increased productivity, improved animal genetics and new economic opportunities for rural families. It contributes to food security and sustainable development in the department of Petén."
