A nutritionist from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) led an educational session on healthy eating for mothers in Petencito village, Santa Cruz Muluá, Retalhuleu. The event aimed to encourage better dietary habits among community members.
David Bámaca, a nutritionist with the Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture component, spoke with local mothers about the importance of maintaining a healthy diet. He explained that "a healthy diet provides essential nutrients and the energy needed to maintain physical well-being and prevent diseases."
Bámaca also emphasized the role of good nutrition in reducing the risk of non-communicable diseases. "A good diet helps lower the risk of illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and some types of cancer, and supports a better quality of life at all stages," he said.
Following the talk, participants attended a workshop on healthy cooking. During this session, they prepared dishes using native plants from the region. This approach highlights how local foods can be used to create nutritious meals without relying on processed products.
The activity was organized collaboratively by several institutions: the Community Council for Urban and Rural Development (COCODE), the Secretariat for Food Security and Nutrition (SESAN), the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS), and MAGA. Organizers stated that this joint effort demonstrates their ongoing commitment to promoting food security and nutrition in Guatemalan households.
