The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) has provided technical and training support to 771 beekeepers in the Petén department from January to October this year. The initiative covered the municipalities of Flores, Poptún, San Andrés, Sayaxché, La Libertad, and San Benito.
The program aims to boost the development of the beekeeping sector in Petén. It is managed by staff from the Beekeeping Unit of the Vice Ministry for Petén Affairs (VIPETÉN).
A total of 176 producers, including those with surplus production and commercial operations, received technical assistance to improve their skills in managing and diversifying apiaries. They also learned about best practices in beekeeping and manufacturing, as well as marketing hive products.
Additionally, 595 other producers took part in 101 training sessions that expanded their knowledge on topics such as the biology and reproduction of Apis mellifera bees, bee health and nutrition, honey production, pollen, propolis and wax processing techniques, packaging methods, pollination importance, and ecosystem services.
According to MAGA: "These actions contribute to improving the quality of beekeeping products, increasing productivity and strengthening the technical capacities of families dedicated to this activity. This promotes sustainable and competitive beekeeping in Petén."
These efforts are intended to help local families improve product quality and productivity while supporting sustainable practices within the region's beekeeping industry.
